5 Indian movies and series you must watch on Martyrs’ Day

23rd March is observed as Martyrs’ Day every year. On this day we Indians remember the life and sacrifices of our freedom fighters who fought for the freedom of this country. This date is significant because on this day in 1931, three young men Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivram Rajguru were convicted and hanged to death by the British Government. Their sacrifice and courage inspired many other youngsters to come forward and fight for the freedom of their country. These legends have even inspired some movies that are a must watch for every Indian and here are our commendations below.


The Legend of Bhagat Singh

This movie by Rajkumar Santoshi tells the tale of the young freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru. The movie was released in 2002 and has Ajay Devgan playing the role of Bhagat Singh. The entire cast of the movie has done a fabulous job and this movie will surely inspire every one of us and fill us with pride.


In 2006 Rang De Basanti was released and we all might have seen this fancier version of The Legend of Bhagat Singh. You can watch the original movies on Netflix and Amazon Prime respectively.

Chittagong

Many of us must have missed this 2012 war drama directed by Bedabrata Pain. The star cast includes some really big stars like Rajkummar Rao, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Manoj Bajpayee who portrays the role Surya Sen, a young teacher who inspires his students to fight for their motherland’s freedom. The plot of the movie revolves around the Chittagong mutiny during the 1930 in British India. This movie won the 60th National Films Award for the Best Debut Film of a Director. Haqeeqat

This movie is one of India’s greatest black and white war film. It is a war drama which was released in 1964 and it was directed and produced by Chetan Anand. The film is based on the 1962 Indo-China war. This film had stars like Dharmendra, Vijay Anand, Sanjay Khan and many more.


This film not only showed us war but the impact that war has on soldiers. The famous song Ab Tumhare Hawaale Watan Saathiyon is from this movie. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero

This movie tells the story of Subhash Chandra Bose, one of the most talked about freedom fighter of India. The movie was released in 2004 and it was written and directed by Shyam Benegal. The plot of the movie begins with Netaji’s escape from British India and how he established the Indian National Army to fight the British Empire. The star cast of this movie includes Sachin Khedekar who played Netaji on screen and actors like Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Rajit Kapur and Divya Dutt. Saat Hindustani

This last movie in the list is one of its kind because it portrays the story of seven Indians who try to liberate Goa from Portuguese colonial rule. It was released in 1969 and was written and directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas. Till date this is the only movie that has been made on this issue. Even though the story does not portray any real life characters but the movie inspires nationalism and will fill you up with pride. This movie was also the debut film of Bollywood’s biggest superstar Amitabh Bachchan along with him the star cast included Anwar Ali, Utpal Dutt and A K Hangal.
